Chubby Chicken!

Some of my best memories with Ron centered around the eating of food. Many times, we would eat together meals that I cooked. Our favourite was chicken. Did Ron ever love the way I cooked it! I guess it was my favourite meal too so I learned how to do it better than anyone (so sayeth my kids!).  Whenever Namchi and Kaima, my daughters, knew that we were going to have chicken, their friends would magically appear just in time to be invited to stay for dinner......

I remember the first time Ron stayed for dinner when I had chicken in the oven...Vancouver days in Kits. Tracy Chapman playing on CD, glorious smells wafting from the kitchen as the roasted bird and potatoes et all was getting ready for the table. When we ate, Ron was so blown away, he could barely eat it was so good!  All he could do was talk about it between mouthfuls!

He started rating them out of 10 .... he was generous, most got a 10! One time when he was staying here on Cortes for a strategy session for WorldBuyDirect.com, he prepared by stopping in Black Creek to buy a chicken from the most amazing grower, whose operation was so clean and his birds so big....He brought one with him and we cooked it up just right. By the way, I never remember from time to time exactly what I use and what proportions and it often depends on what I have on hand.  Well that time a couple of years ago, I must have had exactly what was needed and I must have measured perfectly. And the chicken was huge and so perfect.  When it came out of the oven, we called her Chubby Chicken and when we both had our first bites and couldn't say a word because we were in an ecstasy of taste just looking at each other with huge grins on our faces, Ron finally said that Chubby Chicken was an eleven out of a ten!  And we just cracked up laughing! Was that a feast to remember!

We always made it a point when I came down to Vancouver and then later to Duncan of going out to eat so we could at least ease the pain of the struggles by having a precious time doing something we loved. We shared some wine or a beer over a meal and always felt renewed by those times. I will always remember Ron's joyful appreciation for food and the wonderful satisfaction it gave. He was so easy to please and always so appreciative.

Ron, this one's for you, Buddy!

Writer and Poet

Ron loved to write. He had a talent to grab your interest and make you read right to the end. He excelled in business copy and articles. Please go to WorldBuydirect.com and read the newsletters there...http://www.worldbuydirect.com/enewsletter.php. He wrote every month to the end.

His greatest skill was in writing advertising copy and coming up with unique brands, identities and slogans. He had a mind that could zero in on finding a unique competitive advantage and describe it in a few golden words.

While business writing was an incredible skill, Ron possessed the exceptional talent of writing poetry and doing so quickly and capturing so much so well.

Here is a sweet poem Ron wrote for my tag card for my arbutus knives...

My Favourite Tree

What finer tree
Could there possibly be
Than the majestic Arbutus?

Stretching forth toward the sea
Where whales swim ever so free
Each a West Coast treasure

Now the tree
And a living symbol of the sea
Come together in a Whale Knife
Adding richness to your daily life!

Thanks Ronnie!

Ron Of All Interests

Ron Trainor was in a class of his own as he loved doing just about anything! His interests were so varied and encompassing it boggled my mind. Things I would never think of doing would make Ron happy. Any change from work and business was so welcome for him.

He once said to me if someone asked him what he would like to do today, he could do anything and enjoy it. He then went on to list some activities. Want someone to go with you to the mall?  Want to go and look at houses?  Want to go on a drive?  Want to go for a walk or a hike?  Want to hang out at the beach?  Want to see the sunset or sunrise?  Want to go fishing?  Want to go sightseeing?  Want to visit the gardens?  Want to go out on a boat or harbour cruise?  Want to visit a museum or galleries?  Want to sit and have a coffee?  Want to play mini golf? or go to the zoo or PNE?  Want to watch a movie?  Want to play pool?  Want to watch any sports event?  Want to go to a concert?  Want to explore a new area or take a turn down an unknown road?  Want to go camping?  Want to play music?  He actually went on and on listing so many things that this is just the tip of the iceberg of the wonders of life for Ron.
Ron just loved variety and could thrill at almost all activities.

I could never be that way but I certainly have learned from him to appreciate more and more the simple pleasure of doing something new even if not what I would normally choose.

One activity we shared was playing pool. Ron was very good. He had a soft touch when needed and a master power shot when a slam dunk was called for.  We used to go play when the burdens of business became too great and we needed to unwind. He always won except finally one game I beat him by a smidgen. It was a superb moment and he delighted in it as much as I did!

We of course also shared a love of hockey. I had grown up in Montreal and lived just blocks from the Montreal Forum, where as a kid I used to sneak into hockey games and watch the Canadians. I even snuck into the dressing room after a game and got a stick from Doug Harvey. This was at the time of the dynasty of the Habs and Ron knew all about them. We would laugh at those stories and how I slipped under the watch of the guards!.

We were both Canucks fans and arm chair coaches! We would watch games at the pub in Duncan and talk about them after our long business calls to get a taste of life outside of business. One day before Ron moved from Vancouver when I had some extra cash we went to a game. We just enjoyed that so much!

Ron was very athletic as a teenager and young man. He thrilled at his kids' successes on the soccer field. He played golf too and was exceptional for someone who played so little. He took it up again this year and found it so much fun.

Ron was a fine fisherman. He loved fly fishing and salmon fishing in the ocean. He would catch fish when no one else could. He would just know exactly what to do and could play a fish as a master when it was on the line.

Ron also enjoyed listening to other people's stories and interests. He gave you his complete attention as he was a great listener. I shared with him my stories of travel or skiing or mountaineering.

Whether he did it himself or with someone or enjoyed someone else's activities, Ron was full on. So very rare to find and know someone who embraced life so fully.

Meeting Ron at 18 years of age I was sure he would accomplish anything he set out to do. He was so confident of success.

At the time he was writing songs and was offered a 3-year contract in New York. He turned it down; even Toronto was too smoggy for his liking. Returning to Calgary, he started to hone his marketing skills. Many of his slogans and logos are still being used to this day. That is part of his legacy but his pride and joy in life was his family. Having a Son & Daughter was his crowning glory. To watch and guide their sporting activities gave Ron an enormous amount of pride and satisfaction.

Not being a ‘Mr. Fix It’ he stayed totally absorbed in business. If activities or conversations did not revolve around business, Ron was not interested. It was this total fixation that after 28 years of marriage, drove me away. It was the toughest time of my life because I loved him deeply. If I wanted my own health, I had to leave.

Business deals continued to the end.

Ron also had a joy of bringing people to know Jesus, his family, his friends and complete strangers. He was often stopping to help anyone he felt was in need of shelter, food and of course his Lord Jesus.

Surely, Ron Trainor is with his Lord.

All my love,
Diana

Travel Dreams

Ron lit up whenever we talked about traveling. He yearned to travel because he had done so little in his lifetime...Toronto, parts of BC, Hawaii, Palm Springs and maybe just a wee bit more. He loved to watch travel videos and TV shows so he could get a taste from them. He could picture himself there while watching. I would send him pictures and stories from my daughters when they were in other parts of the world.

His interests were widespread: to doing and seeing everything while there. He so wanted to travel Europe by rail, sleeping on the train in first class, staying at hotels, floating down the rivers and canals, visiting the museums and sites. He wanted to visit all the countries there, sampling the foods, seeing the architecture and local markets. Oh did he glow when we were in that zone!

Thailand, China, Asia, Carribean, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales all over the US and Canada. He wanted me to show him my home town of Montreal as he had never been there and I always talked so fondly about it. Israel and the Holy Land held a special yearning for Ron. He wanted to visit the sites he read about in the Old and New Testament and feel the land for I had described to him how vivid and magical it is.

Years ago I had a Volkswagen camper that I travelled in with my daughters when they were young. He so much wanted to get a fancy camper that he could travel around BC and down into the States in. He had done a cruise and really wanted that again, dreaming of playing the drums on it and spending a year going around the world!

Dreaming, imagining, yearning for a time to set sail into the beauty of the world.
So dear reader, when you find yourself lucky enough to be doing what Ron so wanted, take a moment and say "This one's for you, Ron!", and enjoy the sites and sounds for him and remember how precious those moments are for one who has had so few travel memories.

We'll be there for you Ron!
